Emancipate Yourself from Mental Slavery

Tomorrow is August 1.

Here in Jamaica it will be a holiday : Emancipation Day

This historical day dates back to 1834 when all slaves in British colonies were emancipated but it was a case of freedom with conditions. These conditions included work without pay in exchange for lodging, food, clothing, medical attendance and grounds on which they could grow their own provisions. They could chose to work outside for an additional wage to buy their freedom.

Around this time of year, you will hear our famous Jamaican reggae artiste, Bob Marley “Redemption Song” playing on almost every household radio throughout the nation. “Redemption Song” includes the lyrics : “ Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery…None but ourselves can free our minds”

Bob’s song speaks to redemption, freedom and total emancipation.

Redemption. Freedom. Total Emancipation.

What are you spiritually bonded to that’s preventing you from experiencing total emancipation? Are you are trying to experience freedom with your own conditions? “Yes, God has freed me but I’m still going to hold on to what this person said about me or I’m still going to remember how I failed at this and that” or just simply complain about every past experience.

Redemption. Freedom. Total Emancipation.

John 8: 34-36 says:

“Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”

Who the Son sets free is free indeed! Why? Because you are a child of God! Are you viewing yourself as a child or as a slave?

Is your mindset in the grave or seeking life?

You need to declare a change in mindset today. Mental slavery is a choice. God doesn’t want us in bondage. Jesus Christ did not go all the way to Calvary for us to remain in bondage day after day.

I wonder how many times after the ex- slaves became free they looked over their shoulder to see if their former masters were watching. They experience a huge lifestyle change, yet so many of them still could not live freely.

The brain, (though all organs need each other to function as a team), is the most important. When someone is declared brain dead, it means their whole body has shut down. Everything will eventually stop working. You have to be attached to a cord to keep everything else going. The individual can no longer move, think, speak ,hear, feel, see or hear. The mind as we know it has completely stopped. This is what mental slavery does to us. We are unable to see how far we have come because we think we need the cord of the past to keep reminding us of every sin, every hurt, every pain, every setback while Jesus is stretching His hand out and reaching for us. How can we move into freedom if that cord keeps reeling us back in and plugged into the socket of our past? We cannot experience peace and joy if we aren’t willing to heal and move forward.

So many of us are trapped in our past experiences. We have allowed our past thoughts, mistakes, experiences and actions to define our future. Our past can’t go with us as we walk into our destiny. Remember the Israelites could not walk into the Promise Land because they could not leave their old mindsets and behaviours behind. It took them 40 years to be free.

Does your mindset have you so trapped that you’re unable to be free?

Steps to freedom:

1.Repent and ask God for forgiveness.

( 1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”)

2.Read and meditate on God’s word daily, it’s how God speaks to us.

( Joshua 1:8 — “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”)

3.Pray always, it’s how we stay connected verbally to God. Prayer is also an act of surrender knowing God is in control of changing the way we think or see things. We must pray asking Him to change us from the inside -out.

( 1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Never stop praying.”

4.Know the truth in the word and practice it. When we learn something we must apply it. We now must walk by faith and apply it. Jesus has already set us free from the bondage of sin and death.

5.Speak life

( Proverbs 18:21 — “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”)

6.Share your testimonies.

(Revelation 12:11 — “And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.”)

Philippians 4:8-9 says:

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Declare today that the chains will and have been broken through Jesus Christ. I pray that you all experience — Redemption. Freedom. Total Emancipation.

God alone is our Redeemer, He alone can free us and emanicipate us from mental slavery.

Trust in Him.

Loving the World too much?

I was once asked: ” how do you stay true yourself/ the world while staying true to God?”

You can’t.

This world is temporary. The things of this world are temporary. Our very human bodies are temporary. We are here on God’s assignment.

I think the real question is who are you trying to please? God or man?

Are we distracted and focusing on temporal things or are we having faith and focusing on eternity ?

You will never receive the gift of the Holy Spirit if you’re loving the world too earnestly.

I like to breakdown this topic into a few questions:

  1. Are you invested in wealth or character?

Wealth

Matthew 6: 19-21 (NIV) says:

Treasures in Heaven

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Character

Matthew 7: 21-23 NIV says:

True and False Disciples

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

My friend G recently shared with me that one of the most important thing we must do is focus on developing the character of Jesus above anything else.

       2.  Are you seeking life or death?

1 Timothy 4:8 says:

” For boldly exercise profits a little, bit godliness is profitable for all the things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come”

Godliness, is a characteristic that gives life and is profitable to all things. Doing God’s will and living for Him, following His word, His commandments, reading and meditating on His Word and spending time with Him — these things lead to LIFE

The more you seek God the more you become focused on His will and purpose on this earth – the more you realize that the things of this world are temporary.

Luke 21:33 NKJV says:

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Matthew 5:18 NLT says:

I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.

2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV says:

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Reading these above verses, I understand that nothing else will add value to my life except for the fear and love of the Lord.

Mark 8:36-38 NLT says:

“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels”

Living for the world means we have compromised our faith. Compromising our faith means that at some point we push Jesus to the side to serve our own flesh.

Can you imagine if Jesus pushed us aside?

I know that I do not have to compromise my faith and go against the will of God in order to live a joyful and good life.

How many times have we changed an instruction for the sake of compromise and comfort?

How many times have you sold your soul for the sake of a little worldly pleasure here and there?

James 4:3-5 NLT says:

“And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.”

Today, I dare you to be rare in a world full of compromise.

Be faithful to God.

Boundaries

My loves! Peace and the love of Christ to you all ❤️

God has really stretched me for this post. I have been called to write it for some time now but it’s an area I struggle with at the highest level. So I was really asking God how would I be able to encourage people in an area I struggle with? How does someone who is always available to everyone create healthy boundaries ?

When I think about boundaries I immediately think about the fact that – to create a boundary that would involve me saying the word NO.

I had to realize that saying “no” didn’t make me a horrible person. After all when we were two / three it did become one of our favourite words. So how come when we became teenagers- adults we became afraid to use the word? Then I found this post from Grace Byers a while back:

The first time I said “No I don’t think I will be able to commit to that” or

“ No, I am not going to that event” or “No, I’m not available” – I. Freaked. Out. Why? Because I felt this authority that I’ve never felt before. You see I used to say no and follow up with an explanation. Are we really obligated to explain everything to everyone? That’s when boundaries are crossed. That’s when persons feel like they some what own a part of your life and your space.

I thought over and over I would disappoint people….but here’s the reality, I’m not superwoman and I needed to protect my space. I have my own things to deal with and in order to deal with them … I had to make time for myself! Right??

The more I grow in Jesus Christ , I realize that I can’t say yes to everything. Sometimes it will just have to be no. I have to be Spirit led with my no and stand by it. Not fall into the pressure trap or guilt cycle.

I struggled with this because I used to be a people pleaser. I love to help and people knew this. I can sit and listen to friends or family for hours only to offer the best advise I could. I love to plan and help out with everything and eventually this girl right here GOT TIRED. Sooooo I had to create a boundary for myself.

I also had to ask myself is my life centered around God? Or centred around pleasing people?

Have to allow people to cultivate their own relationship with Christ?

Everyone is responsible for their own lives and own salvation. I can’t make people grow fruit. I can’t work out someone else’s salvation

Philippians 2:12 says:

“Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.”

If your constantly busy with everyone else how do you make time for God? How do you find the time to study the Bible if you’re busy studying someone’s life?

How can the Holy spirit use you if you’re consistently exhausted?

Too exhausted to think? Or too exhausted to hear his voice? Or even too exhausted to simply feel His presence?

Was I constantly entertaining things pulling me away from Christ? ( including people, tv, music and things)

Once I created boundaries, I was set free. I actually had time to think and understand. I was able to grow my relationship with Jesus.

Now, with my healthy boundary I was able to have:

  1. A greater understanding of my Creator and source
  2. A greater understanding of self-love
  3. A greater understanding of my PURPOSE
  4. A greater understanding of self- acceptance and the importance of self-awareness and growth
  5. A greater understanding of true, unconditional love
  6. A greater understanding of the importance of family and friendships
  7. A greater understanding of letting go of thing that no longer serve or honour my purpose
  8. A greater understanding of my portion and sharing my blessings

I no longer conform to the “truths” of this world but to the truths of my Source.

Creating boundaries has made me free from the bondage of my past.

Don’t get me wrong. We are here to love and help each other as brothers and sisters in Christ…..but chose your battles and create healthy boundaries.

It simply allows you to B R E A T H E

Learn to be confident in your no. Ask the Holy Spirit about your yes.

What are some healthy God- led boundaries you create? Would love to hear from you!

lots of love,

The Graced Citizen ❤️

Short Faith Reminder

FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real

FAITH = Forsaking All I Trust Him

“For we live by faith, not by sight.”

2 Corinthians 5:7

When you walk with Jesus – your faith will be tested. The enemy will try to derail the plans God has for you. The enemy can’t destroy you so he will distract you by placing fear in your mind and sight.

Luke 10:19 says: “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

Activate your God given authority and armor up.

FAITH is not hoping that God can….. but know that He WILL. I know this is something we all struggle with individually at least one point or some points in our lives but we must remember WHO we are and WHOSe we are.

Walk consistently in His victory! The enemy wants you to do otherwise. Rebuke him and be faithful to Jesus. Faith moves mountains.

He never fails you yet…. never will.

lots of love,

The Graced Citizen
